OUR mission statement

MADE ON THE LEFT was founded in 2008 by independent designers to support Western Australian creative talent. We hold bi-annual handmade craft markets to showcase local designers.

Being on the left hand side of Australia no longer

means you'll be at a disadvantage.

Our aim is to support all creative designers and events showcasing independent labels. MOTL is a not-for-profit, non-partisan organisation. You may wonder why we promote other markets besides MOTL; it’s because it’s not about us, its about you; the buyers and sellers of indie wares. Here at the blog, you’ll discover up to date information about our latest market, the low-down on some of Perth’s emerging talents, other opportunities for artists and designers and a little bit of fun stuff too. It’s all right here… welcome!

Blogger(s) wanted!

Made on the Left is looking for volunteers to help with our blog dedicated to promoting handmade WA design.
We require bloggers for a few different areas:

Gift Guide blogger
It will be your job to collate gift guides comprised of WA made products for various occasions e.g. Mothers Day. It would be useful if you are familiar with WA makers and their products. You will be required to compile the image to accompany the post.

Profile blogger
It will be your job to create posts centred on people in the WA handmade scene. You can email them questions or interview them personally, it's up to you. This would suit someone interested in writing/journalism/photography.

Opportunities blogger
It will be your job to inform WA makers of upcoming opportunities or items of interest e.g. market stallholder callouts, interesting exhibitions, crafty workshops, etc. You will need to make slight edits to text and source or create appropriate accompanying images.

If you are enthusiastic about WA arts and interested in being part of our volunteer team, please email admin@madeontheleft.com with the area(s) you would like to help us with.

Thanks for your support!

Style and Focus blog

Style and Focus is an exciting new blog that is Perth based. It concentrates on creatives that have taken their style and designs to the next level. “We have called ourselves a ‘blogazine'!”, says Jody, as we show original images and writing, much like the magazines that we freelance for. The articles will continue to grow in their focus and style to bring together all aspects of what makes beautiful homes.

Photography By Jody D’Arcy. Produced and styled by Jo Carmichael

The blog is a collaboration between photographer, Jody D’Arcy and stylist, Jo Carmichael who have an eye for beautiful things and want to source and share with their readers some serious eye candy. Their backgrounds include work for publications such as Inside Out, Home Beautiful, House & Garden, Country Style and Scoop magazine. From all their combined experience, they want to showcase people they have come across (all proudly sandgroper talent), beautiful things they have discovered, style and design hints, tips and forecasts and project it all onto one special blog to share. They focus mainly on the home and garden and all its trimmings, discovering the people behind the design and things they love.

Jo and Jody specialise in creating beautiful and thoughtful styled images for websites, advertising and online stores. Their clients range from architects such as KADA, online stores like Bowerhouse and builders such as National Estate Builders. If you are stumped on how to showcase your products and style, Jo and Jody can round it up, story board, create sets and photograph it for you for all your business needs.

Their vision is to connect, grow and support Perth burgeoning talent base, fostering all that is original and beautiful for example, Made on the Left stallholder, Fluid Ink

Fluid Ink Letterpress

So be sure to check them out! Sign up to their newsletter, like them on Facebook to follow what they are up to. It will also give you a fresh insight into what’s happening on your own doorstep.

Design Competition! Yay!

Hello all you lovely people who are designers, creative types and appreciators, welcome to our first blog competition!

The Made On The Left Marketing Gurus (SarahG, SarahD, Felicity, and Lauren) are currently expanding our Merch range from art posters and badges to include such lovelies as tote bags for your shopping ease, and... Bumper Stickers, so you can wear your MOTL loyalty on your sleeve (or car, or school file, or design folio... or anywhere really!).

The design for the totes wasn’t much trouble (I (osier) had a go at illustration at it was really fun!), but we decided to let you guys at it for the bumper sticker, and reward you for your efforts with a tote bag and a few other super-duper knick-knacks... what a fab prize!

The guidelines are:
1. Must include the words "Made On The Left"
2. Must be
3 inches by 10 inches @ 300dpi
3. We'd love it to have a super cute slogan like "honk if you're made on the left" or other such nonsense!
4. You may use our text logos for the design, but not our posters.
5. Visibility from a distance will be judged favourably.
6. Must be submitted to Lauren@madeontheleft.com by
5pm Sunday the 8th of November.

Yup, that does mean you have less than a week to come up with a design!
Better get cracking! (We hope to have them for sale at the November Hyde Park Hotel event)

Any questions can be posted in the comments, and please link to this competition on your blog, we want as many entries as possible!
