Rent Free Shop Space Opportunity in Montage

Montage Collective Pop-up Shop together with Propel Youth Arts WA, are accepting applications from young Perth makers/sellers for a ‘Rent Free August’ guest spot in their current pop-up shop in William St, Northbridge.

The chosen young maker will also be able to work in store and learn from the group of experienced makers and sellers. Working in-store will be on a voluntary basis - not essential but a great opportunity to learn about selling their own creations.

Important Info
Applicants must :-

• be under 25 years of age
• design and make your own products. The more ‘hands on’ you are the better!
• complete the application form and return it by 24th July
• bring samples of your work in-store to Montage 454 William St Northbridge by 24th July. (Physical samples of your work are needed to assess quality and originality and can be dropped in to the shop during opening hours. Tue - Fri: 11-6, Sat: 11-5, Sun: 11-4)

The rent-free spot begins on Saturday 2nd August, so applicants must have enough stock in hand to fill a space approx 1m x 35cm or equivalent, depending on product, by this date.

The successful applicant will be designated their own spot in the shop totally rent-free (usually $20/week) for the period 2nd – 31st August 2014.

The only cost to the maker will be a small percentage on any sales made during the month (10% for cash and 15% eftpos sales). This charge goes towards the shop and bank overheads. No sales = no costs.

Re-Love Project Part 2

Stage one of the Made on the Left Re-Love Project was finding our piece of furniture.

Stage two was getting it back to a bare timber surface. We had to remove the varnish by sanding it… and sanding it and sanding it! So much sanding! The trickiest bits were the details in the base and armrest bars. But we did it!



After the sanding was done, we wiped it down with a damp cloth to remove all the dust and then we applied a surface sealer - Feast Watson Proofseal.
Next step - the fun bit!

Paper Mountain exhibitions, projects and performances proposals

The Paper Mountain gallery/project space in the heart of Northbridge, is seeking proposals for solo and group exhibitions, projects and performances, for March – November 2015.

Selection is based on the strength of the application, suitability of the project for the space and the resolution of the ideas underpinning the artist's practice. The program is open to practicing artists and curators of any medium.

Paper Mountain aims to provide a stimulating space that is professional and accessible to a range of creative practices and projects. Key objectives are to nurture experimental and interdisciplinary approaches to artistic practice, to support artists at any stages in their career.

The deadline for receiving proposals is midnight 31 August 2014.

Angove St Festival call for stallholders

The Angove Street Festival celebrates all that is North Perth and attracts over 40,000 people each year to the one day event. Shops will be open for business, and there'll be approximately 100 market stalls to browse and buy from as well as some live music, free children's entertainment, and a wide range of food stalls offering cuisines from across the World.

If you are interested in participating in the Angove Street Festival, contact info@angovestreetfestival.com.au for a Stallholder Application Form which will need to be completed and returned by 1 August 2014.

All arts, crafts and fashion stalls must feature products that are locally (WA) designed and made. Stall prices start from $310 for a 3m x 3m marquee & trestle table and all stallholders must hold their own public liability insurance of $10 million.

Re-Love Project Part 1

Last year we redid an old school desk as part of the Feast Watson Re-Love Project and this year we were asked to do it all again!

This time we chose a big old rocking chair and we're going to work our magic on it before it's auctioned off to raise money for the Salvos Stores.

Made on the Left market application tips

If you’re thinking about submitting an application for our next Made on the Left market, here are a few tips...

Firstly, consider if Made on the Left is the right market for you. Have you visited before and taken note of the type of people shopping there? Have you looked at what the other stallholders are selling – do your products fit in well with them, are they of comparable quality and standard? Some categories are very competitive, especially jewellery. If you make jewellery, can you offer a product that is unique and original? Will it stand out from the other jewellery stalls and offer the customers variety? Does your price range fit in with the other stallholders?

If you think Made on the Left is the market for you, then get going on that application!

So what do you need for your application to give you the best chance of being accepted?

1. Good Photos

This is very important. All applications must include photos, even if you have done previous Made on the Left markets. Please don't ask us to look at your website instead of supplying photos. 

Make sure your photos:

• are in focus
• are not too dark
• are not too small
• are not too big (max. size 2MB)
• show your product range
• include a photo of your stall display set up if you have one.

If we can’t see your products due to the quality of the photos, this makes it harder for us to tell if they are suitable to be a part of our markets and will decrease your chances of being accepted.

Another reason to have good photos is that they are more likely to be used for marketing purposes which will give you extra exposure!

Here are some simple tips to start with:

• use natural light
• place your products on a plain background
• Presentation counts - styling
• Take lots of photos - you are more likely to get a good one!

It’s also a good idea to touch up your images using a photo editing program. There are plenty of free online photo editing sites so you don’t even need to install anything on your computer! The main things you will need to adjust will most likely be the brightness and image size.

2. High quality products

We like to make sure we are presenting the best of Western Australian handmade and to make it a great shopping experience for our customers. No matter how good your product photos are, if the product itself doesn’t cut it, we can’t accept your application.

3. Fill in all areas of application

• Make sure you list all the products you will be selling. If you have a range of products, please list them all.
• Include your suburb. Often local newspapers will request people from the suburbs they cover to feature in their newspapers.
• Describe your involvement in the product’s making. Made on the Left markets are strictly for Western Australian craftspeople and designers. In order to make sure we only have WA made products at our markets, we need you to briefly describe your part in the making process so we can be sure you are eligible.

4. Be professional

Try to present yourself and your products in the best possible manner.

Don’t leave your application until the last minute and rush it.
Make sure all correspondence is polite and comprehensible and not asking questions already answered in our FAQ. As you can imagine, we get a lot of emails around this time and we are able to be more efficient if we don’t have to answer the same questions over and over.

Please remember that the Made on the Left team members are all volunteers – we do this because we love supporting WA makers and we want the best possible market, just like you.

5. Don’t take it personally

If your application is not accepted, don’t give up. We are always impressed by the high quality of work out there but unfortunately we only have a limited number of spaces available. Use it as a learning experience and work on your photos or reassess your products and apply again next time!

Subiaco Craft Collectibles and Community Fair Stallholder Callout

The Rotary Club of Matilda Bay is hosting its annual Subiaco Craft, Collectibles and Community Fair on Sunday 26 October 2014 at the Oak Lawn at the University of Western Australia. Mukinbudin Spring Festival Market Day

The Mukinbudin Spring Festival is the highlight of the Mukinbudin events calendar, with past festivals attracting up to 1000 people from all over the wheatbelt and beyond. The Mukinbudin Spring Festival Market Day will be held on Saturday 13 September, 2014 from 10am - 4pm.

After the Market Day finishes, everyone will move over the Sporting Complex and oval where there will be a helicopter “Lolly Drop”, a catered meal and bar with free entertainment and music. During the festival there are many activities including art workshops, tours of the local area (including the beautiful granite rock nature reserves), free entertainment and a spectacular fireworks show.

Stalls cost $10. Indoor and marquee positions are available to early registrations and will be allocated on a first in, first served basis. Limited power is provided, so if your stall is a heavy power user, you will need to provide your own power.
