MADE ON THE LEFT was founded in 2008 by independent designers to support Western Australian creative talent. We hold bi-annual handmade craft markets to showcase local designers.

Being on the left hand side of Australia no longer

means you'll be at a disadvantage.

Our aim is to support all creative designers and events showcasing independent labels. MOTL is a not-for-profit, non-partisan organisation. You may wonder why we promote other markets besides MOTL; it’s because it’s not about us, its about you; the buyers and sellers of indie wares. Here at the blog, you’ll discover up to date information about our latest market, the low-down on some of Perth’s emerging talents, other opportunities for artists and designers and a little bit of fun stuff too. Fringe World market vendors - applications open!


Fringe World Festival is the largest annual performance platform in Western Australia. The 2016 Festival will run from 22 January to 21 February during the city’s buzzing summer festival period.  Nestled in the colourful village style gardens of the hugely popular Fringe World Festival sites in Northbridge, stalls selling DIY experiences and local artisan wares, with an emphasis on the innovative, fun and unique are being sought. 

Successful applicants will be required to: 
  • Commit to at least one block of seven consecutive days of trading during the Festival period (22 January to 21 February); 
  • Commit to having the stall manned during the operational hours of the festival site each day (maximum operational hours on any one day would be 12pm – 2am): and 
  • Pay an upfront site hire fee of $500 + GST per week per stall by 10 December 2015 


The following will be provided:
  • 1 x 3m x 3m marquee;
  • 1 x trestle table;
  • 2 x chairs;
  • 1 x overhead light;
  • Power;
  • Onsite Secure Container Storage; and
  • Site Manager Support.

Beaufort Street Festival applications open



Applications are now open for stalls at the Beaufort St Festival.

Prices for a 3x3 marquee are $450 +gst or $675 +gst for a 3x6m marquee.

The Business Incubator provides an opportunity for new/starter, independent and/or home-based businesses to have a space at the festival. These stall spaces are provided free of charge to selected businesses to encourage new enterprise and diversity at the Festival. Those selected 15 Business Incubator will be housed within one mini-market and share a marquee.

Mount Hawthorn Streets and Laneways Festival stallholders wanted



The inaugural 2015 Mount Hawthorn Streets and Laneways Festival is being planned for May 2015. They are looking for expressions of interest from local hand-made artisan stallholders.

When: 12pm - 8pm, Sunday 3rd May.
Cost: 3x3 stalls from $200.

Summerset Festival 2013 - Expressions of Interest



Summerset is calling all creative types!

“Our vision is to showcase the unique lifestyle and diversity of the City of Stirling through a range of free and low cost events and activities that celebrate our heritage, art, music and culture.” 

Are you an artist, a venue or part of a community organisation? Do you have an idea, or an existing project that you would love to showcase to a wider audience, with the possibility of FREE publicity?

The City of Stirling is currently calling for visual and/or performing artists and organisations to showcase, exhibit or perform in the City’s biggest community arts celebration, the 2013 Summerset Arts Festival! The festival attracts over 30,000 people across a range of events and activities all jam packed into 3 weeks in February!

They are seeking expressions of interest from groups and individuals skilled in the areas of dance, music, theatre, visual and performing arts, projects, workshops and/or installations that are unique, inclusive and professional and best support the Festival's vision. Preference will be given to local groups based within the City of Stirling. 

In exchange, The City of Stirling will provide marketing and promotion, assist with event management (where necessary) and in some circumstances, may also provide infrastructure or additional funding for the event or activity.

Made on the Left KickstART Markets workshop




Join Made on the Left for a workshop and networking session as a part of the KickstART Festival! With the KickstART Markets fast approaching, the Made on the Left team will be discussing everything you need to know about selling at markets, with heaps of handy tips about developing your creative business, including;

- Pricing your products/services
- Stall aesthetics
- Tips and advice for selling at markets
- Approaching shops for wholesale

- Coming up with your business name
- Branding and packaging for handmade products;
- and much more.

You'll also have the opportunity to ask questions and network with other independent artists and small business owners.

Past stallholders at the KickstART Markets have found this workshop incredibly beneficial and useful to their business and art practice. We strongly encourage everyone who is in the early stages of building their creative business or practice to come along. Entry is free.

Suitcase rummage



Suitcase Rummage is a mini scaled market without the hassle. Its about bringing a suitcase (or two!) filled to the brim with your goods and treats. You can be a part of the Rummage experience by selling wares e.g. vintage, artwork, bric-a-brac, clothing, books, jewellery, seconds, hand-made, shoes, records, music, badges, cards, handmade paper…you name it! You must register to sell your wares and you will then be contacted with further information.

The very first Suitcase Rummage in Western Australia will be a part of Midlandia – the Fringe Festival's Midland location in the beautiful old arts centre!

Baysie Youth Fest 2015 - Young stallholders wanted!



The 2015 Baysie Youth Fest is coming up in March 2015 and it is going to be MASSIVE!
The festival will feature the Sound Overload Battle of the Bands Competition, Boom! Skate, Scooter and BMX competition, outdoor games, food vans, a chill out space and a range of other activities to create a festival for all young people. Event details are:
Date: Saturday 7 March 2015
Time: 2pm-8pm
Venue: Wotton Skatepark, Wotton Reserve, Embleton

There will be the opportunity for young artists (18-25) to sell their work at market stalls at the festival. They are looking for individuals or groups who make handmade or original items (such as jewellery, stationery, illustrations, urban art or photographs) or to sell their creative services on market day (e.g. face painting, caricatures).
Each stall will be provided with a 3 metre x 3 metre shelter, tables and chairs. Your stall should remain open from 2pm-8pm. 

To have a stall you must be: 
• aged between 18-25 years of age.
• The goods must either be your own, or other young people’s original products

Summerset Arts Festival 2015


The Summerset Arts Festival is coming soon and there are a few things which may interest Perth creative types.


Embroidery Workshop
Learn the art of embroidery with local artist Bonnie Boogaard. Well known for her quirky food-inspired art, Bonnie gained her Bachelor of Arts from Curtin University in 2010 and studied her honours in Paris in 2011.

Poppy Felting
Create your own poppy to go towards the 5,000 poppies project in remembrance of World War I. Be guided by local artist Bonnie Boogaard who will demonstrate the art of wet felt making.

Artist Open Studios 
Local artists Maryann Devereux, Linda O'Brien and Alison Ross invite you to discover their studios, providing an intimate and privileged insight into their arts practice. 
This is a unique opportunity to experience the artists at work in their own studios. As they open their doors to you with art available for commission or sale.

Fringe World night markets


Fringe World 2015 returns to Perth from Friday 23 January to Sunday 22 February 2015. For the first time, they are looking for creative artisan stallholders to trade in their bustling precinct at the Pleasure Garden, Russell Square in Northbridge for the duration of the Festival.

Fringe World Festival attracts over 370,000+. The Night Markets will form an integral part of the Festival environment and provide a colourful village style atmosphere amongst a range of performances, events and eateries. 

They are looking for stallholders who sell vintage clothing, trinkets, DIY experience and local artisan wares promising an eclectic product mix with emphasis on the innovative, fun and unique.

TRADING DATES AND TIMES
Fringe World Night Markets will operate everyday of the Festival, Monday to Sunday. 
The hours of operation are:
Monday – Thursday: 5pm – 11pm
Friday: 5pm – 1am
Saturday: 3pm – 1am
Sunday: 3pm – 11pm

Applicants can apply to trade in 2-week blocks or the entire 4-week block.
First Block: Friday 23 Jan – Sunday 8 February
Second Block:         Monday 9 February – Sunday 22 February

Nannup Music Festival - stallholders required



The organisers of the Nannup Music Festival are looking for locally made products, craft and art stalls to be part of the festival markets. Stall applications are now open so apply here

Nannup Music Festival runs from Friday 27th February to 3rd March 2015. Stalls are encouraged to trade for the full festival with priority given to stallholders applying for three day trading.

Stall spaces are 4 metres wide by 4 metres long and you must supply your own marquee. 2 day stalls cost $70 per day and 3 day stalls are $50 per day.

Closing date for applications is 5pm, 7th November 2014.

Artist call-out



Are you an artist of any medium, designer, student of either, or in possession of an awesome sense of style?
The Victoria Park Centre for the Arts is seeking creative minds that would be interested in transforming Albany Highway spaces, both outdoor and indoor, into magical and memorable venues for the Ignite the Park Music and Arts Festival in August and September.
There will be venues to decorate, windows to adorn, spaces for installations, and pop-up galleries. There will also be a market space for handmade goods.

Mukinbudin Spring Festival Market Day




The Mukinbudin Spring Festival is the highlight of the Mukinbudin events calendar, with past festivals attracting up to 1000 people from all over the wheatbelt and beyond. The Mukinbudin Spring Festival Market Day will be held on Saturday 13 September, 2014 from 10am - 4pm.

After the Market Day finishes, everyone will move over the Sporting Complex and oval where there will be a helicopter “Lolly Drop”, a catered meal and bar with free entertainment and music. During the festival there are many activities including art workshops, tours of the local area (including the beautiful granite rock nature reserves), free entertainment and a spectacular fireworks show.

Stalls cost $10. Indoor and marquee positions are available to early registrations and will be allocated on a first in, first served basis. Limited power is provided, so if your stall is a heavy power user, you will need to provide your own power.

Urban Couture 2014



Urban Couture provides a platform for Western Australian fashion creatives and beyond to showcase works in a series of events throughout March. The mission of Urban Couture is to support home-grown talent in generating industry exposure.

Now in its fourth year, Urban Couture has become a leading program in the Perth fashion calendar. Urban Couture aims to transform unconventional spaces into places of popular fashion happenings.

The 2013 program was an overwhelming success, supporting over 50 designers and 30 artists in a program of 14 events attracting over 30,000 visitors. In collaboration with the Joondalup Festival, Urban Couture 2014 is set to put the spotlight on designers, artists, illustrators and photographers nationwide.

Stretch Arts Festival Mandurah 2014


Expressions of Interest are now open for The Stretch Arts Festival 2014. This event is held over the weekend of the 3rd & 4th of May 2014, 10am - 4pm in Manjar Square, Mandurah. The festival is an annual community arts festival that is held each year in May. It attracts up to 10,000 festival goers to Festival Square over the weekend.

Artists, designers, stylists and craftspeople with unique and individual quality crafted designs are invited to apply to exhibit and sell. Products must be handmade by the stallholder.

A 3 x 3mm space outside is:
• $90.00 for 1-day trade.
• $135.00 for 2-day trade.
(Prices are inclusive of GST.)

On Friday 6th December, it's your chance to shop til you drop and experience the food, fashion, music and art of Mt Hawthorn. Joondalup Fesitval Market Stallholder Expression of Interest


The Joondalup Festival is back in 2014! There will be two massive market days attracting over 40,000 attendees across the weekend. If you are a stallholder who can bring quality products such as gourmet food, fashion, jewellery, design, arts, crafts, home-wares or gift-wares to the Joondalup Festival Markets then they want to hear from you.

The Joondalup Festival will be held in Central Park, Joondalup City Centre on the following dates:

  • Saturday 29 March 2014, 2.00pm – 10.00pm
  • Sunday 30 March 2014, 2.00pm – 9.00pm

City of South Perth Fiesta 2014




The City of South Perth is currently seeking an Expression of Interest from community groups, businesses, local organisations, visual artists, performance artists and theatre groups who would like to be part of the City of South Perth FIESTA from 8 March – 22 March 2014.

The City of South Perth’s FIESTA is an annual festival held over three weeks in March each year attracting up to 30,000 people. FIESTA’s 19 year tradition is cemented in the community as an iconic feature of the area. Since its inception in 1994 this much loved festival has continued to grow in notoriety each year and now enjoys a solid reputation as one of the longest run local government festivals in WA. In March 2014, this premier community festival will celebrate its 20th year anniversary and will incorporate a theme to celebrate the momentous occasion - “Explosion of Colour – Celebrating 20 years of Fiesta in 2014”.

The City is seeking events and activities that are unique, inclusive, well planned and best support the Fiesta 2014 theme to be incorporated into the festival program. Examples of the sort of events and activities include; art exhibitions, theatre performances, fairs, sporting competitions (that incorporate the theme), lawn bowls and croquet evenings, children’s storytelling, place activation (i.e. the park(ing) day campaign), workshops, cooking classes, trails or tours and/or seminars. 

Expression of Interest forms are to be returned to the City of South Perth by Tuesday 1st October 2013. If you have any accompanying photographs, website links or examples of the type of event/activity you would like to host, please submit these as part of your expression.

The Mukinbudin Spring Festival Committee is having a Market Day on Saturday 14th September 2013. The Spring Festival continues to be the highlight on the Mukinbudin events calendar, attracting visitors from all over the wheatbelt and beyond. 
  
The theme for the 2013 Festival is 'FIESTA'.  The Mukinbudin Act-Belong-Commit Spring Festival commences with the Art Exhibition opening on Wednesday the 11 September and concludes on Saturday 14 September with the Market Day and Outdoor Bar Sundowner.

NORTHBRIDGE O-DAY - THIS SUNDAY!

Northbridge is OPEN this Sunday for O-Day with over 100 things to do, see and collect around the 'hood.

From backstage tours to treasure hunts, to workshops and performances, O-Day lifts the lid on all things Northbridge.
Get adventurous, get creative and get very busy - how much of the O-Day program can you complete?

Explore the massive FREE program at the Perth Cultural Centre, Northbridge Piazza and everywhere in-between.

Stumble upon curious delights as you browse designer markets, grab a tasty treat from one of the delicious food stalls,
hunt down your free magnet set and pick up some new tips and tricks from one of the many workshops.
Dance in the dark, learn some circus secretsyarn bomb a Vespa scooter at the Montage Pop-up shop or
beam yourself into a movie on the big screen... who knows where you will find yourself.

Fill in your O-Day guide throughout your adventure, collect stamps as you complete activities and once you have
enough points visit the info booth to get your free souvenir book bag.

When the sun goes down the fun is not over, party on at one of the many O-Day after parties!
