KickstART Youth Markets report & a winner!

Made on the Left spent Saturday perusing the KickstART Youth Markets which were being held at the Cultural Centre in Perth. A yearly event devoted to showcasing the best artists and crafters aged 12-25 once again proved West Australian art is in good hands.

There were a variety of stalls devoted to art, jewellery, home wares, vintage clothing and more. It was definitely an eclectic display and a feast for the eyes, not to mention a temptation for the wallet as we stumbled on yet another stall overflowing with gorgeous products we couldn't resist.

We were also there in an official capacity as Made on the Left was judging the best stall display. The winner will receive a write up in an upcoming newsletter as well as a stall at the July Made on the Left market in a coveted front door space. We discovered to our delight that what the vendors lacked in experience they more than made up for in imagination. Stalls were dressed up with repurposed furniture, banners of every kind and all made fantastic use of the space they had.

Some of the stalls were an explosion of colour and organised chaos while others were a study in minimalism and carefully thought out design. It was clear stall holders had put a lot of thought into how best to display their products and emphasise their unique talents.

All of us judging knew we had a clear winner after looking at all the stalls. The winner, Lauren Mills of Little L, had clearly put in an enormous effort to display her products to their best. Her display utilised multiple heights, complementing props, consistent labelling and signage and was perfectly suited to her brand - it was difficult to find any fault in it. Even her outfit matched!

Congratulations Lauren, you deserve it.

Marika Moriyama and Linda Chan for their beautiful Autumn themed minimalist display which worked so perfectly with their brand and was a delight to see.

Laura Byrnes for her wonderful eclectic vintage display which felt so homely and welcoming.

Krissie Grech of Silhouette Workshop for an amazing display of handmade cupcakes stands and tempting display of jams and candles.

Melbourne Design Market applications open

Do you have a product, idea, or something savvy that should be in front of the people who matter? Do you feel like taking your products on an interstate trip (and hopefully not bringing them back)?

Well, applications for "THE Melbourne Design Market" are now open!

The market is on Sunday 29th July from 10am – 5pm at Federation Square undercover carpark for the eighth year.

The Melbourne Design Market's selection process for prospective stallholders is highly curated to ensure the quality and diversity of products on offer to shoppers maintains the highest standard.

Please note that all traders are required to have credit card/eftpos facilities and stall costs start at $550. This is big time, people!

Evolution @ Jull Street Markets - call out for youth stallholders

Armadale is having its first festival and you can be a part of this amazing event!

Armadale Youth Resources has teamed up with Made on the Left to enable young artists, fashion designers and craftspeople to be a part of the Evolution @ Jull Street event as part of the National Youth Week celebrations.

There will be a big youth arts, fashion and music festival in the Jull Street Mall precinct of Armadale, spilling out into the Armadale Train Station and Minnawarra park. It’s set to be a great night and will attract a huge crowd.

If you are an artist, craftsperson or fashionista under 30 years of age, you are invited to come and sell your goods.

You will get a marquee, a table for your products and a chair - all you need to do is bring your amazing creations!

Best of all, there's no stallholder fee, simply a $30 deposit which will be refunded on the night.

KickstART Youth Markets stall holders wanted!

The KickstART Youth Markets were a huge success last year and they will be back for National Youth Week 2012! The markets will take place in the Perth Cultural Centre on Saturday 21 April from 11am - 5pm.


If you have original or vintage wares to sell, such as clothing, jewelry, accessories, art, knick knacks, homewares or anything creative they would love to hear from you! To apply, head to the Propel Youth Arts website, download the information sheet and fill out the online registration form.


Registrations close 7th March 2012.

To have a stall at the KickstART Youth Markets:
• You must be aged between 12-25 years of age.

• If you are under 16, you must be accompanied by a parent/guardian at all times.

• The goods must either be your own, or other young people’s original products or vintage items.

Curvy 8 Submissions open now!

The Curvy series of books features the work of the world’s leading female artists and illustrators. They're now up to issue 8 and you could be a part of it! If you’re an established or aspiring female artist or illustrator and you’re looking to have your work seen by an inspired audience around the globe, then get busy! You don't have long to get your best work ready as submissions close at 5pm sharp (AEST) on Friday Feb 17th.

Perth Brown Owls

You may have heard of the Brown Owls craft group. It was originally started by Pip of Meet me at Mike's in Melbourne. Well did you know there is one here in Perth too? In Bayswater to be precise and they meet on the third Sunday of the month from 2 - 4pm. The next meeting is on 19th February, 2012. The Dollar Shop – call for submissions

The Dollar Shop is a unique retail experience selling great design at affordable prices. Unfortunately it's in Sydney, not Perth but you can still submit products!

It is a collaboration between graphic designers Louise Helliwell and Alex De Bonis and supported by City of Sydney. All products in-store will be created by local artists, designers and creative types with the brief that nothing can be sold for over $20.

They are looking for a wide range of amazing products, for example: clothing, jewellery, bags, stationery, self-publishing, photography, posters, weird machines, instruments, kitchenware, illustration, music, craft, prints, things from far off lands etc. The product has to be designed/made/altered by you. It is a statement about making affordable design without selling yourself cheap.

Made on the Left Christmas drinks

As you may know, Made on the Left has struggled to find a permanent home since the function room at the Hyde Park hotel was turned into a liquor store ;-( 140william was a fantastic location for our winter market but unfortunately it’s not available for our Xmas market like we had hoped.
However, we will be having a Xmas catch up with all you lovely people and we are on the search for a permanent new venue. 
We are also looking for new volunteers, especially in the areas of finance, blogging, marketing, sponsorship, PR or grant writing so if this interests you, we would love to meet you!
The MOTL Xmas drinks will be at the revamped Hyde Park Hotel, from 6pm Friday, 2nd December - it would be great if you can make it to share ideas, catch up with other crafters and have some great food and wine.
