Made on the Left Christmas markets poster!

We are pleased to present the poster design for our Christmas markets! It is by the talented Laurie Melia and shows a pink haired girl surrounded by Christmas lights and a succulent wreath. Laurie describes it as, “fun, quirky and colourful” which fits the vibe of the market. Thank you Laurie, we love it!  

The Perth City Christmas Markets are presented with the City of Perth on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd November in Forrest Place from 10 - 5:30 each day. There will be over 50 stallholders each day and we hope to see you there!

Poster reveal for next market!

We are pleased and excited to reveal the artwork for the next Made on the Left market by the talented Sally Ridge Illustration.

Sally says, "For me, the loveliest part of Made on The Left is arriving home with a treasure or two in tow. I put on the kettle and enjoy a sweet treat from a Made On The Left seller and finding a home for my newly acquired goodies. The feeling of bringing a treasure home to the nest was my inspiration for the poster design.

I chose Sacred Kingfishers because they are such beautiful, native WA birds – my husband and I often see them in our garden. The composition is a bit of a nod to Audubon’s ‘Carolina Parakeet’ – he is my favourite artist and an Ornithologist who had such an astounding knack for capturing the beauty of birds.

You might also notice some wonderful work in the birds’ nest from some of my favourite retailers and market buddies Enid Twiglet, Little Sketchy and Charlie and James too!"

The Boutique Design Market in Claremont

The Town of Claremont and Claremont Now are currently seeking artists, craftspeople and designers for Claremont’s first Boutique Design Market.

Made on the Left Christmas market applications open now!

The time has come to put in your application for our Christmas market! We are working with the City of Perth to bring you a 2 day market extravaganza! The market will be on Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd November from 10am - 4pm in Forrest Place and you can apply for one or two days. For your chance to be part of our next market, apply here and please make sure to read the FAQ before submitting your application.

Stall space: 3x3m stall space with marquees provided.
Cost: $200 per day.

Angove St Festival call for stallholders

The Angove Street Festival celebrates all that is North Perth and attracts over 40,000 people each year to the one day event. Shops will be open for business, and there'll be approximately 100 market stalls to browse and buy from as well as some live music, free children's entertainment, and a wide range of food stalls offering cuisines from across the World.

Date Sunday, 26 October 2014
Time 10am – 5pm
Location Angove Street, North Perth

If you are interested in participating in the Angove Street Festival, contact info@angovestreetfestival.com.au for a Stallholder Application Form which will need to be completed and returned by 1 August 2014.

All arts, crafts and fashion stalls must feature products that are locally (WA) designed and made. Stall prices start from $310 for a 3m x 3m marquee & trestle table and all stallholders must hold their own public liability insurance of $10 million.

We're looking forward to our third market at the State Theatre Centre on Sunday 28th July, 11am - 5pm and applications for stallholders are now open. To be eligible, your products must be made in WA.

The website has a limit of 2mb per image so do be aware of this when sending in images - if your images are too large the application won't go through! Also make sure they are not too small as we want to be able to see your work. There are plenty of online image resizing websites if you don't have access to image editing programs. If you are not sure your application has gone in, email us at applications@madeontheleft.com and we'll check for you.

Categories such as jewellery are always very competitive so the quality of your photo could make the difference between being accepted and missing out.

It is possible to apply for a double space - let us know if this is of interest to you.

Applications close 30th April so don't dilly dally!

Q&A with "A Story Of"

Tell us a bit about your business

Everything you buy has a story.  Whether it has come from a factory or handmade; if it's recycled or completely new; the people who have made it.  All these things make up the story of an item, and that's what A Story Of is about.  I create a little over half of the products on my website myself in WA, using things like vintage plates, recycled leather and local wool.  I also collaborate with some fair trade artisans in Thailand on designs and source yet more that have been designed and made by groups working with women at risk.  I try to make the stories of my products accessible and help people to feel the heart in what they are buying. 

What inspires you?

All sorts of things - a good book, movies, architecture... I get most inspired, though, when I travel and get to know different people, cultures, and the arts that are a part of them. 

What do you love most about selling at markets?

I love meeting new people - sellers and customers - finding out what they're upto and what they love about handmade items.  I also love to see the huge range of work on display.  WA has some amazing creativity to offer!!

What new products are you working on?

I'm just starting work on our first clothing collection, actually!! I want to collaborate with artisans in Thai hill tribes and use their traditional fabrics in modern designs.

Apart from that, I'm always working on new jewellery ideas, playing with different bits and pieces I can recycle. My most recent thing is using leather from belt offcuts, and I'm starting to get into cutting wood from naturally fallen branches.

What is your favourite product and why?

I do love working on my necklaces made from pieces of vintage plates. Finding the plates in op shops or receiving broken ones from friends which I can give new life to. They already have such a history, I can only imagine what their stories are!! I love being able to add my own paintings to make them into something new people can enjoy and feel good wearing. Each one is so unique with different pictures and character.

Not your typical walk in the woods...

It’s show time again and applications for the November 4^th 2012 Made on the Left market are now open. Our November market is going to be our biggest yet. Keep reading for a few teasers and application hints:

• We have an amazing woodland theme which we’ll be using throughout the whole market in advertising, promotion and graphics.
• This market will be held inside the State Theatre Centre in the Underground Theatre as well as outside in the Courtyard.
• We’re doubling our advertising/pr budget so we can reach an even bigger audience and attract more customers to see and buy your amazing products.
• The committee will again be voting for the best stall display and the winner will receive a free stall at the following market as well as input into where they’d like to be positioned and a blog post interview.
• We have a new application form with new sections so you can really tell us about your products and why they are so special. One section allows you to list shops you feel your product is suited to who we’ll then personally invite to the market. There is also the ability to upload more pictures as they are so important in the application process.

APPLICATION HINTS

1. Send in the best pictures you have, not only do we want to see what you make but we’re also looking for pictures which show: previous market displays, your branding/tags/packaging, how the product is used/worn/displayed and personal shots of you with your product or in your workroom (this is important later for when we’re seeking promotion ideas and images to send to publications).
2. We’re looking for applicants who fit the market theme and/or our target market and we are always looking for new undiscovered designers who make amazing products who want to get them out into the market scene. Our market customers are incredibly varied, ranging from the young to the young at heart and it is our goal that every one of them find something they love at each market.
3. Please don't send images that are too big (over 2MB) or too small (under 50KB) and make sure they are in focus and not too dark.
4. Read the FAQ section on the application page for more on the day information.

We’re so excited about the upcoming market and hope you are too. Pass this webpage address on to anyone you know who might be interested, even if they’ve never done a market before. I was lucky enough to be in Melbourne for the recent Markit @ Fed Square and was astounded at the amazing and creative stall displays (not to mention the wonderful products)! Here are some of the best.
