OUR mission statement

MADE ON THE LEFT was founded in 2008 by independent designers to support Western Australian creative talent. We hold bi-annual handmade craft markets to showcase local designers.

Being on the left hand side of Australia no longer

means you'll be at a disadvantage.

Our aim is to support all creative designers and events showcasing independent labels. MOTL is a not-for-profit, non-partisan organisation. You may wonder why we promote other markets besides MOTL; it’s because it’s not about us, its about you; the buyers and sellers of indie wares. Here at the blog, you’ll discover up to date information about our latest market, the low-down on some of Perth’s emerging talents, other opportunities for artists and designers and a little bit of fun stuff too. It’s all right here… welcome!

I Sing in the Shower

Well anyone would if they had really nice soap from The Soap Opera, one of our gorgeous artists on Sunday :)

Word was that she sold out of HEAPS of her designs, and she was hand-cutting her soaps in front of the customers as they bought them! Neato, it's fun to have a peek behind the scenes at a creative label sometimes innit?

Now That We Are Famous

Lemme hear you say the words "national television coverage".

Go on, say it.

Big hugs to channel ten and the people behind the scenes at the 7pm project. We promise to watch your show more now :)

Ikea Competition

I was wandering around Ikea the other day, as you do, collecting random bits and bobs and saw this 'Sew Me What You Got' competition.

Using Ikea textiles, sew us what you can create with them!
Home furnishings, clothing, toys and accessories are just a few ideas that come to mind...what can you create?

Click on the above image for more details, but they are due August 12 2010 and you could win a $1500 Ikea gift card.

Now I can't sew (actually I can sew on a button and have been taught to darn socks...) but thought that the ultra creatives that read this blog (that's you!) might be up for winning some money.
Have Fun & Good Luck :)

Volunteering for the Art Gallery of WA

The Art Gallery of Western Australia needs volunteers!

Unwrapped Applications Now Open

Applications for the next Unwrapped event are now open.

Check the event page for more details and follow the link to apply for a designer stall. You will then need to Sign In to your account and the form will pre-populate with your basic details.

This Unwrapped event is part of the Perth Fashion Festival and represents a once-a-year opportunity to showcase your work to Perth's fashion set. We will be the first event to launch the new Urban Orchard space, opposite the WA Art Gallery.

Thanks to Perth Fashion Festival and the East Perth Redevelopment Authority, marquees will be included in the stall costs. Your stall space will be roughly 2.5m square. Costs for each category of designer are included on the application form in the drop-down menu and remain unchanged from last year.

Selected designers will also have access to upload and sell new season pieces on the Eboutique, prior to the day.

As space is limited, priority will be given to new designers. We strongly encourage you to submit your best application, including images and a description of your range. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Confirmation of a place for those successful designers will be sent via email a month prior to the event.

We understand this falls on the same day as other market activities in Perth, which is unfortunate. When our event date was chosen by the Festival, there was no apparent clash, so please ask your customers and friends to mark our event as the priority in their calendar.

Kind regards,

The Unwrapped Team

Artist Call Out

The Colosoul Group inc. is a not-for-profit organisation aiming to support and enhance not only the experiences of young people, but also seek to bring the communities within Perth together. We’re a publications group run entirely by volunteers, whom we train and provide opportunities to excel in the media and arts industries.
This September we are holding an art auction and exhibition to raise funds for burns victims in Princess Margaret hospital. It will be held in Gallery Central in Northbridge, September 2nd to 4th. 25% of the sale of the artwork will go to the artist and the rest of the proceeds will be given to the Princess Margaret Hospital burns unit as a donation.
We are currently seeking artists interested in having their work exhibitioned for free and auctioned off for this great cause.
This event will not only raise the profile of emerging artists, but also gain awareness of the obstacles that these children must overcome.
If you are an artist and are interested in getting involved in this project please contact:
Pam on 0423 598 874

Four key words: small, local, open, connected

Worth a listen...

Design for Social Innovation

The design of products has greatly improved over the last thirty years. Even though cars and many of the white goods we use are much more environmentally friendly today, we are still consuming at a rate that's unsustainable. Ezio Manzini discusses how designers and design researchers can do a lot to empower social innovation for sustainability.

Ezio Manzini
Designer, engineer, architect, educator and author; Professor of Design at the Milan Polytechnic where he's Director of the Unit of Research Design and Innovation for Sustainability and coordinator of the Master in Strategic Design.
