A new exhibition of works at Edith Cowan University’s Spectrum Project Space is investigating the transformative nature of the physical body.
Kimberley Pace’s exhibition, Peel, Fondle, Ogle is part of her Master of Arts by Research studies at ECU and incorporates multiple components including garment, video, sound, sculpture and performance.
The exhibition aims to explore the in-between condition of the body, where the internal body finishes and the external begins. It also investigates the in-between spaces, such as the orifices of the body, as spaces which simultaneously entice and repel us.
“Often the sites of the body that we consider desirable and erotic are also sites of repulsion and disgust,” Ms Pace said.
Ms Pace said while making this work visitors to her studio would be compelled to squeeze, fondle, caress, poke and stroke the developing garments while telling her they felt repelled or uncomfortable doing so.
“This interaction demonstrated for me how exchangeable desire and repulsion on the body is,” she said.
Opening night will include a performance where three models will wear and interact with the works in the exhibition.
