Summerset Festival 2013 - Expressions of Interest

Summerset is calling all creative types!

“Our vision is to showcase the unique lifestyle and diversity of the City of Stirling through a range of free and low cost events and activities that celebrate our heritage, art, music and culture.” 

Are you an artist, a venue or part of a community organisation? Do you have an idea, or an existing project that you would love to showcase to a wider audience, with the possibility of FREE publicity?

The City of Stirling is currently calling for visual and/or performing artists and organisations to showcase, exhibit or perform in the City’s biggest community arts celebration, the 2013 Summerset Arts Festival! The festival attracts over 30,000 people across a range of events and activities all jam packed into 3 weeks in February!

They are seeking expressions of interest from groups and individuals skilled in the areas of dance, music, theatre, visual and performing arts, projects, workshops and/or installations that are unique, inclusive and professional and best support the Festival's vision. Preference will be given to local groups based within the City of Stirling. 

In exchange, The City of Stirling will provide marketing and promotion, assist with event management (where necessary) and in some circumstances, may also provide infrastructure or additional funding for the event or activity.

Artist call out - A Dot on the Run

Form invites Western Australian artists to participate in A Dot on the Run, an exhibition of drawings on paper.

In March 2015, FORM will launch a survey exhibition of Western Australian drawings at the Port Hedland Courthouse Gallery. The Port Hedland Courthouse Gallery is an independent exhibition space in the Pilbara that has been managed and programed by FORM since 2007.  A Dot on the Run will present a curated selection of original, unframed drawings on paper by Western Australian artists. The exhibition will launch on Friday, 13th March, 2015.

The title A Dot on the Run is inspired by Paul Klee’s quote, ‘a line is a dot that went for a walk’.

Paper Mountain exhibitions, projects and performances proposals

The Paper Mountain gallery/project space in the heart of Northbridge, is seeking proposals for solo and group exhibitions, projects and performances, for March – November 2015.

Selection is based on the strength of the application, suitability of the project for the space and the resolution of the ideas underpinning the artist's practice. The program is open to practicing artists and curators of any medium.

Paper Mountain aims to provide a stimulating space that is professional and accessible to a range of creative practices and projects. Key objectives are to nurture experimental and interdisciplinary approaches to artistic practice, to support artists at any stages in their career.

The Light Locker Art Space is a public exhibition space showcasing 2D and 3D works from local artists aged 35 and under. Its sister space in Grand Lane, Perth, has showcased new works from more than 50 young artists since its inception in 2011.

Artists, groups of artists and curators aged 35 and under are invited to submit an Expression of Interest to develop an exhibition for the Roe Street Light Locker space.

25under25 Art Exhibition

Applications are now open for the City of Fremantle's annual 25under25 Art Exhibition! If you're a creative young thing between the age of 12 and 25 you're invited to submit an application to take part in the next 25under25 exhibition, happening in April 2014.

The 25 under 25 Art Exhibition is held during National Youth Week each year at the Moore’s Building Contemporary Art Gallery in Fremantle. Young West Australians are encouraged to submit artwork of any medium for the chance to be amongst 25 emerging artists selected to exhibit.

This event is an excellent opportunity for young artists to gain exposure and experience in exhibiting artwork. A series of workshops led by a variety of established artists and industry professionals will also be held in the lead up to the event, offering young artists the opportunity to learn about presenting work for exhibition, submitting exhibition proposals, grant applications and more.

Applications close on 21st February 2014. The exhibition opening night and award presentation will be held on Friday 4th April 2014, with the exhibition continuing until the 13th of April, 2014.

City of Stirling Art Award and Exhibition Entries Open

Entries are now open for the City of Stirling's biennial Art Award & Exhibition.  With a prize pool of over $11,000, entrants will have the chance to win the Acquisitive First Prize, Local Artist Award, Emerging Artist Award and People's Choice Award. 

Prizes will also be awarded in the categories of: Oil Painting, Acrylic Painting, Watercolour, Drawing/Works on Paper, 3D Sculpture, Print Media (non digital), Mixed Media.

The exhibition will boast over 200 entries from Western Australian artists and will be open to the public daily.

Elizabeth Marruffo is an artist of Mexican and English heritage whose work uses traditional painting and crafting techniques to explore the lived experience of loss and displacement. Her work draws upon an elaborate collection of personal symbols, icons and totems to create tender and haunting narratives. In her most recent exhibition, Marruffo pulls focus on one of her most persistent totems.

Pup Pup is the Boss of the Stars sees the artist present a large installation that pays tribute to the dogs of our childhood.

"Mexican street dogs have been important in my life and also important subjects in my arts practice. The dog from my childhood was named Corazon, she had a black love heart shaped patch on the side of her body. Corazon means 'heart' in Spanish. She was the puppy of Twotwo, a street dog that my parents found and nearly ran over on a dirt road in Mexico.

I think that if you had a dog in your childhood, they often contribute really significantly to your earliest memories and they act as a kind of witness to the events that happen in your childhood. They contribute so much to your personal and spiritual development and are a way we can learn about love, nurturing and responsibility. Significantly, they are also often the first love of our life that dies."

Marruffo will be recreating the Canis Major constellation with hundreds of tiny needle felted dogs. Each one, suspended within a silver wire star, representing a childhood pet. These lovingly hand fashioned objects are each being sculpted from the photos and stories of contributors. Personal memories, loves and lives, being resurrected and celebrated.

People are invited to contribute their own stories and commission a sculpture on the artist's Pozible campaign.

Pop-up Gallery

A free exhibition space for all visual artists to display their work for the month of August. It's in the old Xile shop, right next to Saba at Shop 20, The Colonnade Subiaco, 388 Hay St, Subiaco.

Submissions started coming in on the weekend and the second bump in will be from 12pm - 4pm Sat 11th & Sun 12th August.

All types of work welcome - photography, graphic design, paintings, charcoal, anything you can hang, plus sculptures for the floor area. It must be suitable for public viewing. No size restrictions!

Work will be affixed using either blu tac on the walls or pins on the partitions. Please put your name and contact details with your work just in case someone wants to know more about you.

There will be a little area for people to sit and hang out and performances by a talented artist or group every day that it is open after the initial bump in.

Call for artists

All WA artists are invited to participate in this year's WA Visual Art Expo on 21st October at Winthrop & Hackett Halls and surrounding gardens, UWA.  It is a great opportunity for artists to get direct feedback from the public on your work; network with art industry professionals i.e. gallery representatives, framers, art supply outlets as well as other artists; be exposed to different techniques, framing methods and workshops.


If you are willing to demonstrate your art on the day, let the organisers know so they can place you in a visible location. You will also be mentioned in all future promotions for the Expo - a great boost and marketing tool for the exhibiting artist!

Ever wondered what happens to the things you throw out in your rubbish?

An exhibition by emerging WA designer Holly Pepper is about creating new beginnings for the discarded by-products of our lavish western lifestyles. On her return from a year volunteering in Samoa, Holly was struck by the materialistic WA lifestyle and was determined to show people how useful the objects we discard can be.

Holly invites you to come and view the results at her maiden solo exhibition at the Free Range Gallery from November 18 to 23.

The exhibition will showcase a range of original and thought-provoking textile sculptural works. Most of the pieces have been inspired by the re-use of locally sourced industrial waste, to create bold tactile designs.

Holly would like to thank local not-for-profit REMIDA for its work recycling useable waste products, which has been of great value to her. She also spends countless hours scavenging among council roadside collections, op-shops, tip shops and friend’s chuck-out piles.

Media and public are welcome to attend the exhibition opening from 6pm on November 18.

Long trip provides inspiration for Sarah

A trip through freezing Russian countryside on the Trans-Mongolian railway gave young Joondanna artist Sarah Long, 25, the inspiration for her new solo exhibition Tuda i Abratna (Russian for ‘round trip’), on show at Behind the Monkey, Highgate from June 15 to 29, 2009.

Drawing on the theme of leaving home to travel overseas and the characters encountered along the way, Long has created a whimsical narrative, featuring characters such as an elephant and a pumpkin stalk who have ventured abroad…and into very unfamiliar territory.  Pencil and ink drawings, acrylic paint and computer graphics combine to tell the story of the characters and how their paths cross on their individual journeys.

“When you travel, you open yourself up to different possibilities and ways of living, crossing paths with people that you would never encounter in your everyday existence,” says Long.

“You are also bombarded with new experiences – and what might seem a terrifying encounter to one person might be invigorating to another.  I believe that exhibition-goers will read these images in different ways according to their own experience.” 

Long is no stranger to diverse experiences, combining her art practice with a career as an Associate Genetic Counsellor at one of Perth’s major hospitals.  Her role involves assisting people to understand complex medical information using a combination of scientific knowledge and counselling skills.

“I adore my day job and am currently working towards full accreditation as a Genetic Counsellor,” Long explains. “I also love creating my art and find it a great balance to study.”

“My ambition is to publish picture books aimed at both children and adults, while continuing to progress in my career as a Genetic Counsellor.”

Tuda i Abratna will be on show at Behind the Monkey Highgate from June 15 to 29, 2009. Visitors to the Beaufort Street shop and gallery will also enjoy a themed window display created by Long to accompany the exhibition.

Sci Fi Comes To Northbridge

We love supporting upcoming talent, so when we heard about the debut solo exhibition of Martin Wills, we just had to tell you all about it!

Territory Twelve is the first exhibition of emerging twenty-six year old artist Martin Wills. The exhibition, a brooding and apocalyptic mash-up of futuristic dystopia, science fiction disaster and comic book kitsch, runs from opening night on November 12 until November 18 at Gingers Garage, 267 William St, Northbridge.


Territory Twelve slices Ridley Scott's Blade Runner with Marvel Comics and Fritz Lang's Metropolis to create oppressive, colourful sci-fi vistas. Tripod invasions, zombie plagues, and city-crushing robots - they're all featured in work ranging from scrap-paper sketches to epic landscapes and portraits that take on a super-human scale.

Martin has been active in the local arts scene for years, but when his band 'Civilised' imploded after three years of performing and recording, he crossed over to the visual arts as his main creative output. Freelancing as a designer for local bands and record labels, his parents divorce provided the trigger for his themes to coalesce. The gloomy and oppressive world of Territory Twelve was originally conceived as a short novel, but after six chapters he quickly switched back to visuals. The writing, he will quickly admit, was probably the worst kind of tripe, but luckily the cinematic sheen he couldn't conjure with a keyboard came more naturally with a brush.

Territory Twelve is just one of a string of new exhibitions in the newly established Gingers Garage, a gallery space which has added to the resurgence of independent stores and galleries along William Street in Northbridge. The exhibition kicks off with opening night on Wednesday November 12 and runs until Tuesday November 18. For more information please visit www.territorytwelve.com.
