OUR mission statement

MADE ON THE LEFT was founded in 2008 by independent designers to support Western Australian creative talent. We hold bi-annual handmade craft markets to showcase local designers.

Being on the left hand side of Australia no longer

means you'll be at a disadvantage.

Our aim is to support all creative designers and events showcasing independent labels. MOTL is a not-for-profit, non-partisan organisation. You may wonder why we promote other markets besides MOTL; it’s because it’s not about us, its about you; the buyers and sellers of indie wares. Here at the blog, you’ll discover up to date information about our latest market, the low-down on some of Perth’s emerging talents, other opportunities for artists and designers and a little bit of fun stuff too. It’s all right here… welcome!

Farewell Unwrapped!

Unwrapped has always been one of Made On The Left’s favourite markets so it was a sad day when we learnt that their market on Sunday 24th March would be the last ever. MOTL caught up with founder Ebony Frost to find out all about her inspirational work helping designers sell their handmade work to the public through Unwrapped designer markets since 2006.

Ebony Frost
Do you and the rest of your team have any formal training/experience which helped you organise and manage an event?
I have a degree in Mass Communication and 10 years experience in large-scale event organisation, so I think the combination of the two has been very valuable. Team members along the journey have mostly been PR grads with lots of enthusiasm and a passion for locally designed products, which is always essential when you have to put in long hours!

Unwrapped are passionate about showcasing the best in designer handmade in an outdoor setting. Why did you consistently choose outdoor locations?
Perth has a great climate and I felt we should make the most of that (though this has backfired on me several times!). Plus the atmosphere is much more relaxed if you have space to browse and wander down the street.

Handmade has experienced such a huge surge in popularity over the past few years, why do you think this is?
I think people are always looking for something new and quirky to help shape their personal style. Magazines like Frankie have helped promote the independent designer ethos in Australia over the past few years and I think it’s a philosophy that fits well with a lot of people and it made sense that eventually there would be a backlash against the mass-produced products we see everywhere.

Does Unwrapped have any predictions for the future of handmade in the Western Australia; do you feel it will continue to grow in popularity?
I think we need to be careful to nurture handmade as an industry. It’s too easy (and a lot cheaper) for designers to take production offshore to increase their profit margins. So we need to make sure we are prepared to pay a bit more for something that’s been handcrafted.

What do you love most about putting on Unwrapped events and what do you find the most frustrating?
I love the feedback I get from first time designers – they get such an enormous confidence boost from the event!
I guess it becomes frustrating when people are critical of things that I can’t control (like the weather) and perhaps don’t appreciate that good events don’t just ‘happen’, they require hundreds of hours of hard work and sacrifice.

Organising such huge events at great venues such as Forrest Chase must be very hard work; what inspired you to have it there?
The City of Perth invited Unwrapped to be part of their Christmas events program.

What are you most proud of in terms of Unwrapped’s achievements and why?
I wanted to change the cultural landscape in Perth when I started Unwrapped and I feel like we’ve done that. We started the ball rolling and allowed other events to establish themselves in the same vein. I think there are way more options out there for young designers now and that was always the main aim.

What can we look forward to from Unwrapped for the last market?
The last event will hopefully be the best yet! It looks like being a perfect sunny Perth day… we’ll have 60 stalls of your favourite designers, plus a whole lot of new ones. The theme for this event is ‘vintage’ so expect to see ‘old meets’ new’ influences throughout the stalls, plus a Laneway Art Gallery with some fantastic photography and art!

The last Unwrapped will be held in South Perth.
11:00am - 5:00pm, Sunday 24 March 2013
Angelo Street, South Perth. Don't miss it!

Stallholder Opportunity : Vintage Vixens and Vamps!

Following their very successful debut market, the VVV ladies are looking to do it all again, but they need some sellers to show their awesome vintage wares? Got a great collection? See application details below, and check out their blog http://vintagevixensandvamps.blogspot.com/

Vintage Vixens & Vamps I on May 23 was an outstanding success with over 1200 shoppers leaving laden with goodies. We are expecting even more through the door this time around and we are having some great feedback about exciting elements we will introduce for the event.

We will be doing our bit in the lead up to Vintage Vixens & Vamps II by distributing more than 6000 posters and fliers as well as featuring regular updates about stallholders on our blog and facebook page. On the day itself every shopper will be given a comprehensive brochure listing all the contact information of participating stallholders.

As management of Vintage Vixens and Vamps moves into the hands of the newly emerging retailer organising committee we look forward to growing and developing our exciting industry and its relationship with the local community.

There are some very exciting times ahead. Recent discussions with the Mayor of Fremantle and senior officers have highlighted the possibility of future VVV events being part of bigger and established Fremantle festivals.

New Guest Blogger : Tara from The Ginger Fox

Hey there, howdy and hi Made on the Left readers, my name is Tara Fox and I own The Ginger Fox an ever growing collection of delectable vintage clothing and accessories. At some point in my lengthy web travels I stumbled across the Made On The Left website and was so to happy to have found a site that supports and celebrates local creativity and good ole DIY. Now I am tickled pink to have the opportunity to be a guest blogger helping to unearth some of WA's hidden crafty creatures.
A little about me, I began as a Murdoch graduate in Marine Science and Biological science which lead me to a position in the Department of Water as essentially an environmental scientist. Almost three years and one thought provoking jaunt around South America later, I knew the life of science wasn't for me. I hung up my survey khakis and threw myself into a hobby which had always bordered on obsession, the continued and endless search for THE perfect vintage piece. I now have to-die-for vintage apparel coming out of my ears as well as a proud collection of vintage jewellery, handbags, homewares, shoes and menswear.
I stock quality items found locally and an even larger proportion imported from the US and UK. You can find my vintage treasures at the Perth Cultural Centre Markets every Saturday from 10am to 5pm. I also have a range of late 60's jewellery stocked in Wild Lily Empire on Hampden Rd, Nedlands and Oxford Street, Leederville. In addition, I upload photos regularly (some gorgeous ones from TJM Photography and some not so awesome ones taken by me) to my blog and facebook page so if your eyeballing a particular piece just drop me a line.
Well that's about all for now but I will be back soon with a some info on lush local treats. In the meantime I'll leave you with my latest made-in-Perth (in a way haha) find, my ridiculously cute Maltese Shi Tzu puppy called Indiana Jones, known to his friends as Indy. Byeee

Trash or Treasure?

Lauren/Osier here, back for another informative and interesting blog post (psht, who am I kidding...)

Today I went op-shopping, one of my favourite past-times. I'm lucky that the town where I op-shop, is generally a low socio-economic area, so shoppers arn't looking for the s
ame stuff I am at thrift-stores. They're looking for work/boring clothes, whereas I'm looking for vintage retro delights. I like to think I'm pretty good at finding the good stuff, I went looking for a cardigan today, and found three that were perfect. So I thought that I might share my tips with you.

1. Go to a low socio-economic background area and visit the thrift stores there. Subiaco, Fremantle and Dalkeith have already been stripped to the bone, so dont bother
going there.

2. Use these websites to find shops close to you or where you intend on heading. You'll note that I've only listed charity stores. This is because I only shop at charity stores, because feeling good about spending money on clothes is pretty rare.

salvos :: vinnies :: anglicare :: good sammys :: paraquad

3. ALWAYS try on shoes and go for a walk around the store in them. Dont buy them if you're thinking "oh, they'll stretch" because they wont (no matter how cute they are), they've already been worn. Or if they're really high heeled, or they rub, cause they'll give you blisters pretty quick.

4. The dress sections are always my favourite, and basically offer a whole outfit for under $10 most of the time. Make sure you try these on too, as not everything is going to flatter y
ou.

5. This goes without saying, but never buy socks, undies or pantihose/leggings from op-shops. Yuk.

6. If you're struggling to think what to wear something with, either dont buy it or find something in the store that will go with it, otherwise it will be chucked under the bed and forgotten.

7. ALWAYS take a car and your own bags, as many op-shops now have a "no-plastic bag" policy and often dont have anything to replace them. Juggling three pairs of shoes, a dress and a vintage typewriter on the bus home is just going to annoy you.

8. Take note of the price. I've had a couple of nasty surprises when I've gone to checkout and found that the cute jacket I thought was a cool bonus was actually THE most expensive second hand item in the history of the world.

9. This might sound gross, but smell the armpits/crotches of anything you've got your eye on. Chanc
es are that if it stinks, you're not going to be able to get rid of the smell, sorry.

10. Lastly, always wash things at home before you wear them.

Any questions or tips? I'd love to hear them! xoLauren
